Mercer Island: A Celebration

By Donald A. Smith, PhD, with help from AI tools.

Version with a woman singing (further below is a version with a man singing):

In the heart of Lake Washington, safe and serene,
Lies a gem cradled soft amidst the lake’s lovely sheen.
From tree-lined north streets where people shop and play,
To the mansions in the south where rich people stay.

Mercer Island, our dear home so fair,
With breezes that dance through cedar-sweet air.
From Mercerdale’s green, to homes with a view,
We cherish your peace and your summer skies of blue.

There’s joy in the gardens, there's calm in the air,
With yachts like white swans in their slips resting there.
The lake gleams with wealth in a shimmering scene,
A life tailor-made for a luxury magazine.

We stroll your clean sidewalks with latte in hand,
While cars speed below The Lid’s shielding land.
Let cities grow louder, with traffic and strife —
We’ve mastered the art of the quiet, good life.

The trails rise through forests near Mercerdale Park,
Where joggers and dogs leave their civilized marks.
There’s peace on the path and shade under trees,
And nobody panhandles, curses, or bleeds.

Homelessness? Strife? Those are Seattle things.
We host no shelters. Oy! The troubles they bring!
We give from afar, from our well-tended lawns,
Then sail off at dusk with our Sperrys still on.

Seattle to the west, Bellevue to the east,
But we’ve got our refuge, our quiet, our feast.
An island apart, yet close to the fray—
We savor the silence throughout the day.

Mercer Island, where fir branches sway,
Where sunsets glow gold at the end of the day.
From lakefront retreats to the parks we hold dear,
We raise our voices to this piece of Paradise right here!

So here’s to our island—serene, self-contained,
With beauty and privilege securely maintained.
